Modifiers

Advantage and Disadvantage

Rolling with advantage

Rolling with advantage is essentially "getting a better chance at success". For example, if you are waiting to ambush someone, you will have the element of surprise. Theoretically, this means you're more likely to land your first attack, as your target is not expecting it.

In practice, rolling with advantage means that you roll two dice, and take the highest result.

Rolling with disadvantage

Disadvantage is the flip side of the advantage coin - you're less likely to succeed. In the above example, if you're the one being ambushed, you're probably a lot less likely to be able to defend yourself from the first attack.

Similarly, rolling with disadvantage means that you roll two dice, and take the lowest result.
