Of The Season
Quote
"Tell Dr. Nate that Gale sent you, and he still owes me for the mushrooms. Except that it takes you a while to reach the clinic, and by the time you do your fever is spiking, and so instead of the requisite message you instead tell the poor soul who greets you that 'A gale'a m'shrooms sent me cus'a my hands.'" - Zephyr in Oh help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
Siegfried smiles in the direction of Sunjata. "Thank you, that's very generous." He drank the whole thing quite quickly, as it helped him to get his thoughts in order. Then he took some salt sticks and drank some water with juice.
The train of thought was tempting, but he had obligations. He wanted to work for the whole thing and not just get it as a gift. But it would be better for his brother. Was this a serious offer? He didn't know if Sunjata really had that much influence. "Let's discuss this again after my first job. If I do it well, you pay the normal amount and a milkshake. I think that's a good deal. If I do a bad job, I don't look so good,"he smiled, trying to organize his thoughts.
"I live at the bottom of the Gasp Allys. It's a little difficult sometimes, but I have a lot of work there. I try to make the buildings there safer with my work. It's often wet and I always sleep with a bat next to the entrance door. Cast iron door keeps most people from doing something stupid. But I just try not to make enemies and help where I can. This ensures that most people leave me alone. I have the old Elena next door who always looks outside and often gives me tea from her family. It is nice. But I miss the sun. Or to see the starry sky. My pride and joy are a plant that I have grown and nurtured. "Says Siegfried proudly, he likes this kind of life. He leaves out the dark things he has to do to survive. Forging weapons. Or making burglar tools. So he makes sure that the people from below leave him alone.

Sunjata’s content to listen to Cian explain his situation as he reaches out for a few snacks to soak up the alcohol, mostly aiming for a fry basket alongside a nice sparkling juice of some kind. He sits back, content to devour a few fries before sipping from his drink, growing a small fraction tense at the question Cian airs about the Drench.
For Sunjata? The place is tense, only because he’s only ever down there wearing the enforcer’s uniform.
So he nods to Sigfried’s offer of paying him with a milkshake if he does a good job, a soft snort of agreement, before the man launches into what the Drench is like for him. There is a soft smile as Sigfried mentions the plant, but internally he twists at everything else. “I wish I could spend more time there than I can. I want to be able to experience it not as an enforcer.” He admits, flashing a small apologetic smile. “There’s good people there.” It’s really all he can say, having not experienced it that much without any other influences.

Cian listens in silence as the other two tell him about the city below, and he adds that to what he has already heard about it during his time in Unk'Kotoll. He does not envy those living down there and the more he hears about the conditions, the more determined he becomes to hold onto his spot on the Plates. Not that he feels like he belongs up here either. However, that could come from not being from the city at all and feeling out of place in general.
His hands turn the mug around idly. "Is it difficult for Drenchers to visit the Plates? For the sunlight and that. And to see the stars? When there wasn't this lockdown and curfew, that is." His eyes dart between the other two. Living down there and just visiting up top seems possible in his mind, unless there were checkpoints in place making that difficult even under normal circumstances.

"I don't think it would be healthy for you to go down there, Sunjata. If you get recognized, you won't make it back up, but if you want I can help you to find how it truly is down there" Siegfried said calmly. It was not a threat but a fact. Enforcers were hated and blamed for many things. Siegfried felt it was their duty. But there were also negative examples who used their position to gain an advantage for themselves.
Then he turned to Cian. "It's hard. Unless there are festivities like this one. You have to go through a lot of scrutinies and sometimes if you get to the wrong enforcer it's like a nightclub. He doesn't like your face, you can't go on. But it's also because there are some people down there who want to see the world burn up here. They see him as the reason for their miserable situation. Unfortunately, it is also because some nobles are responsible for this situation. From what I hear, to be honest, I have to make up my own mind," he said without much emotion. The smile did not disappear. But he knew that there were people down there who would like to blow up the supports, that the plates would fall. No matter how many lives it would cost. But fortunately, that was only for now.

Sigfried’s honesty is one that’s true and just, given his first interaction in the Drench when his helmet had been knocked off and he’d been recognized nearly immediately. It’s a memory that spurs a bit of a wince on his face as he nods, huffs a small unhelpful laugh. “Yeah I’ve already had some issues with that…” He trails off, reaching up to stuff his mouth and shut it up before he continues, munching on some more of the snacks that were surrounding them.
He listens as Sigfried explains, everything the blacksmith says is true and the majority of what he wants to fix, but he seems to withdraw a fraction as it continues – his father the main cause of the lockdown and the frustration, the distaste. After all, Shaju wasn’t even here. An event put on by Tsili in order to try and alleviate the growing tension. He wonders if it’s working for her.
“The divide is difficult. There are many on both sides that are angry.” The Platers that hate the Drenchers, the Drenchers that hate the Platers. And then there’s a few and far between of ones like him, sympathetic, actively wanting to change things for the better, not knowing who he can and cannot trust with the information of the treason he’s committing.

Cian gains a more thoughtful expression on his face as he ponders what is being said. A new mix of feelings goes through him; Relief for still living on the Plates, guilt for doing the same, concern for the apparent tension between the two sides. At the same time, he does not feel like he should be down there instead. His place is neither on the Plates nor in the Drench and in the end, it would not matter where he lived if tension continued to rise. He would probably be hit by one side or the other along with everyone else, should push come to shove.
"I feel quite unfortunate to get stuck here in these times... And as I mentioned before, at least to Sunjata, that this lockdown just seem to fan the flames of unrest." It was indeed a problem for everyone. Not just the local citizens. Cian had heard enough talk between other visitors as well. How it is 'outrageous' and a lot of 'they just can't keep us here!'. "I wonder how long they will be able to keep it before people and businesses start reaching the breaking point. If they truly will keep it until they find out whoever attacked the construction, or if they will get forced to lift the lockdown earlier."
He finally gives in and snatches a couple of fries from the snack collection. Chewing on them slowly and trying to resist the now rising urge to devour one of the burgers (or both) as well. Living on canned food or the cheapest street food he could find was not doing wonders for him.

If Sunjata really came down, Siegfried would have to think about how to deal with him. If he were to help him, there would be some people who would avoid him or even have problems. But he really didn't care. Sunjata wanted to know what it was like. "If you come down again. We'll just dress you up again and you'll get a normal haircut. But the most important thing is to leave out the perfume. If you are too clean you will be noticed. But we'll talk about that when you bring me your iron glove" he said with a smile. He would help him and maybe he would get a good job for it. Maybe even a friendship.
As for Cian's question, he had to think. But the answer came faster. "It's dangerous for small businesses. I think that's why a lot of orders fall through. Which is reflected in the anger towards the nobles. The people who have to go to work every day from the bottom to the top could lose their jobs. Also there the rage is large. The financial damage can only be withstood by people with large reserves. But these are only assumptions I myself do not live here so long. How it really is, maybe a Sunjata knows better," he says and tries to see the whole thing logically.

There’s a soft hum that slips from his throat at the consideration of Sigfried’s words, one that also coincides with Cian’s unfortunate timing for his arrival. “Good to know.” He offers – though it’ll be difficult for him to get a haircut if he was to go back up immediately after. He can’t imagine just how his father would rage, even if he tried to pretend like it was some undercover agent bullshit when he was realistically wanting to help the Drenchers.
So he continues to take little bites here and there, debating Cian’s question and Sigfried’s answer for it. “I think they’re hoping it’ll draw out the people who have done it, but so far it hasn’t worked and that’s the issue we’re facing with why it isn’t lifted.” He has no idea who’s to blame for it, he just knows he’s gotten a lot of bad luck when it comes to where his unit has been placed. Sure, he could be patrolling the Core as he had done before, but his father had made sure he’d get some real experience, going so far as to shove him down below for the first night of lockdown enforcement and the subsequent days after.
It's been a huge pain, truth be told. “Eventually they’re going to have to say something about it. Enough people start to grow upset up here on the Plates and that’s when they’ll finally make a plan. It’s just a shame it takes so long to get to that point while they sit there waiting for something to come that very likely might not come at all.” Waiting around for the perpetrators to come forward with what they’ve done instead of actively looking into the evidence and information.
Ah, but what does he know. “I heard a rumor that they’re intending on figuring something out for housing, but I’m unsure how far that’s gotten. They’ve been too busy with the festival announcement to do much else.” A shoulder rises and falls in a shrug. “What they should do, in my opinion, is keep it so people can’t get evicted if they can’t pay. It’s not the majorities faults that they can’t leave.” To this he glances toward Cian, wondering if he’d feel the same. Sunjata isn’t in a position to have to worry about that, but the Garanenz native is.
and for the last night i lie could i lie with you?
With a heavy sigh, Cian shakes his head slowly and shrugs a shoulder. "Honestly can't see those responsible decide to suddenly come out and admit to the attack. Maybe they are not even here anymore. Could have gotten out just after the explosion, who knows." If nothing was being investigated, if it was all a waiting game, he dreads the possibility of being stuck until the end of the year. 'Call your family. Tell them the truth' his own voice nags at the back of his head. Another sigh leaves him and Cian snatches up a few more fries to chew on.
Sunjata mentions the living situation and Cian gives him a glance in return and waves a hand in a half-dismissive gesture. "If they were to do something like that, they would also have to pay all the motels and hotels for it. I cannot see the owner of the one I am staying at liking the idea of people living there rent free. He's made it clear that should anyone be as much as one day late, they are out. And good luck trying to find any other free rooms right now within affordable price range. At least on the Plates."
Cian gives Siegfried a somewhat apologetic look. "Not to speak ill of your home, but I am not keen on having to move down there anytime soon." He does not mean to sound spoiled or anything. As much as he felt out of place on the Plates, it still felt safer right now. Perhaps he was wrong in that. Perhaps it was safer down in the shadows below, but he is not ready to find that out yet.

"I'm sorry to be so blunt, but I agree with Cian that you won't get the people who are responsible for this. They want to do harm, and they're doing it more than they bargained for. You are playing right into their hands. They are afraid of discord, although they are long gone. The ones who decided this are dumber than a piece of bread," he said, shaking his head. That was the first time the smile became less.
Again he gave Cian an approving nod. "If I were an owner of such a building, I wouldn't want that either. Who will pay for the damages? Who controls it? The question is, if the people up here get help, what about those who work up here but live in the drench? Are they thought of? If not, they will attract more people to their side. With this stop, something was tested. How capable are you in a crisis situation I have to say you suck at it? I think the ball is great, I don't want to talk it down. But some people will see a flaw in it and want you to expose it rather than do something like this," he said, grabbing a fry and stopping himself to say more.
"I know you don't mean any harm. I live even further down than the normal people, I live where the drenched people think they are better. It would be only for emergencies. If for some reason you end up down there, my door is open to you," he said with a smile.
