But for now I've no peace and a million seconds
"May I...see what is?" Sam asked curiously, his genuine interest in what Rexanna could do overtaking his usual stoic reluctant to ask questions. Whether she'd be able to show him in the rain was another matter, but he wasn't too sure how magic worked like that.

Regardless of if she could show him or not, they began to walk to the potential scene of the imaginary crime he was looking out for. Sam tried to keep pace with Rexanna, his cane quickly tapping against the walkway between his footsteps, which always sounded a little heavier on the right side. He was expecting to see nothing, to apologise for wasting her time and turn to walk off to the barracks again within seconds, but then there was the glint of something in the bushes.

"What is that... oh - thank you." Sam nodded to Rexanna as she held out the branches then knelt in the space left, reaching out to grasp whatever it was that was catching the light.

His curiosity in her magic is one that she finds relatively surprising, but one she’s content to indulge in before she wraps everything up to show him where the spot had been. Taking the lighter in her hand, she sparks the flame and with her free hand she makes a slow and smooth movement, causing the flame to drift from the lighter to swirl around the palm of her hand, taking all of her focus in order to do so. And when she can’t focus any longer, it sparks into nothing but little sparks of light before it disappears forever and she flashes Samuel quite a proud smile.

But they have investigative work to do – even if she wasn’t an investigator, simply just helping out as she drifts toward the bushes where the item sits within, listening to the dull echo of Sam’s cane as they walk. They reach it and she pulls the branches aside to let him in, watching over his shoulder as he kneels into the space to retrieve the item. It wasn’t much, but it did appear to be a badge of some sort, though of what kind Rexanna can’t tell.

It’s unique, though, specific to the Plates for sure, and part of the markings have been rubbed off by the birds that had collected it as a shiny treasure. “What is it?” She asks quietly, though her voice seems to drip with a hint of concern.

"Ah-" Sam's lips parted in an impressed, amazed inhale as he watched Rexanna demonstrate her mastery over the fire. There was something about the sight that set a unsettling fear in the centre of his chest, but it would be hard to deny the spectacle of it. Forcing himself to close his mouth and adopt a more stoic expression by the time she finished, he gave a curt nod that barely expressed his admiration. "Good control. I would like to see more, some time."

After all, it was very pretty and impressive now, but it was useless unless she could direct it at an opponent.

The badge he retrieved from the bush sat in the palm of his hand neatly, about an inch across either way. Immediately, Sam recognised it, and he felt a sinking cold run over his face. "It's...a commendation badge. For Enforcers who do the best in their first year's training." He explained, distracted, trying to decide if this was a cause for concern or not. The badge could have just been discarded, could have been brought here by anything, but he'd been so prepared to find nothing that anything related to the Enforcers was enough to give him pause.

"...Perhaps we should take a closer look around this area." Sam said, finally, straightening back up with the help of his cane and putting the badge in the front pocket of his jacket. "Your help would be appreciated, Ms. Revanti."

Somehow, she doesn’t expect the Bravlet Strategic Advisor to compliment her magic, and his admiration sparks a brief rose hue to glimmer on her cheeks and a quiet little “thank you” offered in response. It’s a feeling that she’s sure will stick with her for a bit longer, one that she can think on later if ever she needs a pick-me-up. “Anytime.” She adds a bit belatedly, already marking the possibilities in her mind and wishing to be able to master that fancy move she’d been practicing, if only to have something else to show for it.

Right now, though, there seems to be something off and afoot, and Rexanna can’t help but to notice the shift in Samuel’s face, the way he answers distractedly. And it doesn’t sit well in the slightest, her stomach suddenly churning with the idea that something terrible might have happened here or at least nearby. “I see.” She murmurs, if only to let him know she was listening.

But he straightens up and she lets the branch go when he’s clear of it, watching the leaves on it dance with the movement she’d given it. Her head swings back toward him as he asks for her help, a small smile blooming on her lips as she nods. “Of course, I’m happy to.” Though perhaps her happiness to help is simply more because of who is asking. “Where should we start?” She isn’t used to this kind of work, more than happy to be directed.

Had Rexanna been one of Sam's underlings, he would never have shown his confusion and worry outwardly, but he had let it slip. To have anxious minds work on a project was to sabotage it from the beginning; he paused in the search to give her a comforting smile. "Don't worry. I'm sure it's nothing. It's just...for the paperwork, you understand."

Mostly, it was. Just so he could say honestly he'd looked into it, when he wrote about it later.

There was, however, that tiny chance it could be something more...but until they had reason to believe it, it was best to not give that idea any time. There was too much happening in the city, too much tension, to add any suspicious happenings with Enforcers into the mix.

"Well, you and I are hardly equipped to look in the water. Forgoing that...hm." Looking up, Sam scanned the area around them, the walkways and possible paths around them that one could take. It was easy to see a lot of the ground from here and nothing called out...so they would need to go somewhere more secretive. A darker alcove, slightly out of the way, that led from the waterside between two buildings - he pointed at it. "There. Let's see if there's anything of note. Of course, if there is anything dangerous..." He drew his sword, which he still kept on his person at all times.

His answer sounds something like what one might read beneath a training exercise, like instructions on how not to freak out surrounding pedestrians. But she doesn’t comment on that, instead Rexanna offers him a relieved smile and a nod. “Of course.” But she still has some sense that things aren’t totally right.

She steps aside to let him lead the way, nodding in agreement that she certainly didn’t want to get into the reservoir, and instead watching with surprise as he pinpoints a spot to go to, and Rexanna finds herself stepping behind Samuel as he draws a sword, wholly impressed and enamored, certainly feeling like she was in safe hands as she follows him. “I trust that you’ll keep me safe.” She tells him with all the honesty she has in the statement, following him toward it and keeps her eyes peeled, spotting a small square of fabric amongst the underbrush of the alcove that she points to, stepping closer to him to mention it to Samuel quietly. “What’s that?

Honestly, Sam felt like his defensive position must have looked ridiculous, with his clear limp and outfit not made for this kind of work - but Rexanna said she trusted him; it put a faint smile on his face that came all the way from his heart. He pressed it down. No time for that right now.

They advanced towards the alcove. His own eyes didn't see anything in the shadows; when Rexanna spoke, he had almost declared the space to be empty, but she was right. Something laid among the branches. Before he looked at it, seeing there was no threat here, he relaxed a little and sheathed his sword, then bent down to investigate, trying to pretend he didn't notice the slight wobble and tremor of his legs.

"It's..." Sam picked up the cloth. At first, he wasn't sure what it was; he turned it over one way, then the other, looking for any kind of recognisable pattern. It was dirty, frayed at the edges...but on one corner, a cream stripe could be see curling up around the angle. He leaned forward to focus on it, squinting his eyes (and wrinkling his nose as he focused, a habit he would be horrified to know he had). "...I cannot say for certain, but it may be a recruit's uniform. Hm."

Two pieces of evidence pointing to a young Enforcer...he wasn't sure what to make of it, but it wasn't time to panic just yet. Standing up, he folded the fabric and placed it in his pocket. "Of course, this could be the result of drunken revelry instead of malicious intent. The recruits often...celebrate their accomplishments. Though, admittedly, not here."

To anyone else, it might have looked ridiculous – but for her, it didn’t look that different from what she’s seen in those short films or theater acts, where someone intending on protecting another takes charge, regardless of whether there’s a limp or attire to combine with it. She feels safe, and at the end of the day that’s all she can ask for.

Especially when she spots the little bit of fabric and her gaze drifts from it to the advisor, and Rexanna chews on her bottom lip as he inspects it, watching the way Samuel wrinkled his nose, finding it charming despite the reasoning for it. She can only imagine him doing the same thing, reading over reports and such that didn’t make sense, or had some clear error.

He does do wonders at keeping her calm, however, because with the realization that it fell into the category that he was searching for, there was also a more reasonable answer than a murder at the reservoir. So she straightens, exhales a soft sigh, and offers him a gentler smile of understanding. “I have heard some of their celebrations back on POSE.” She admits, knowing full well how rowdy they could get. “Maybe a bird took it with them to make a nest? Or perhaps it fell into the reservoir on their way home and washed up?” She spouts out options that are certainly not malicious, still intrigued and curious.

As Rexanna added that she'd seen the celebrations, Sam nodded, trying to convince himself at least for the moment that that must have been the case. Later, when he was investigating on his own and not at risk of upsetting a civilian, he would have to consider the darker implications of this evidence when combined with the rumours circulating in the Enforcer's camps. First of all he'd have to run a register, find if anyone was missing, then if they were...could they afford to drain the water? Find divers? The thought of what they might find wasn't worth lingering on.

"A bird...I would not have considered that. Good idea." It was as much of a possibility as anything else.

With no further leads to follow, he put his hand over the pocket containing the fabric and looked back over the water and walkways. "I should head back to the Bravlet house. While I doubt this is any indication of danger, it may be smart for you to leave this area be for a while, Ms. Revanti. Just in case." If something were to happen to her here today, he would never forgive himself, after having seen the clues. "I can escort you back to town, if you wish."

She would remain calm so long as Samuel did. So long as he told her there was nothing to worry about she would fervently believe in it. Perhaps even to a fault, but she certainly wouldn’t second guess him. He was the professional here, and she can’t help but to beam a bright smile at him as he tells her that she had a good idea. “Thank you.” She murmurs lightly, turning to get back toward the path.

She also finds herself looking over the water in the reservoir, head tilting slightly as she nods and takes in his warning, stepping closer to his side as if it might protect her further despite there being no warnings around. “I would like that very much, Mr. Tsinbrog.” She flashes him another bright smile, before tucking a rogue strand of hair back behind her ear. “I know the circumstances are potentially bad… But, I did enjoy helping you today.
